The load profile of every country has peaks and valleys. The peak of a daily load profile also represents the high cost, and the valley represents the lower cost, also known as the base load.
What makes the cost high is the high demand, the use of diesel engines and gas turbines utilizing expensive fuel (oil is used when gas is not enough), and the low efficiency technologies like solar. The intermittency also of renewable energy technologies requires the use of these peaking plants that can flexibly start, stop and change load fast. If the peak demand can be reduced, it follows that costs will then be reduced.
Coal is commonly used as base load plant because it is not flexible but the fuel is cheap. So there goes the conflict with global warming. Geothermal, wind and water power generation technologies are limited by location, with the latter two themselves affected also by climate change. Nuclear power still has its political and social issues.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
So how do we change the graph to our advantage?
1. Intensify energy efficiency
This will lower current overall energy demand with much less investment requirements. We can accomplish this through stricter regulations and education, so that even children can participate in the campaign.Controls can also be imposed for demand side management.
2. Storage
Pumped hydro storage takes advantage of the lower cost of electricity during off peak periods by acting as a pump to store water at high elevations, then act as a turbine during peak periods, making it price competitive with diesel engines. Electricity for batteries, hydrogen, compressed air and methane can be produced from intermittent excess power generation by solar and wind energy.
3. Self-generating facilities
Incentives must be given by the government to companies generating power for their own internal consumption. Firstly, they operate off the grid, reducing even the base demand. Secondly, their excess capacity can be exported during peak periods, as long as they are not using expensive fuels like diesel. So the effect is two-way. This will also help encourage small players to invest in power generation, so we don't have to wait for the big investors take action.
4. Encourage night life
This may entail health issues, but this will be helpful in demand shifting. Off peak periods generally fall in late evening. Time-of-use (TOU) rates will make households do some chores like washing clothes in the evening when price of electricity is cheaper. Some companies can do their operation at nighttime if energy costs will be attractive.
5. Electric vehicles
Although this one will rather increase overall demand, but it will encourage putting up cheaper base load plants, instead of each vehicle individually using liquid fuels, which is less efficient on a bigger picture and thus more polluting. so the curve will still flatten with the rise of the "valleys". With a smart grid, cars can export their battery charge especially during emergency situation when the electric grid is on yellow or red alert.
6. Bicycle-friendly roads
Government must improve public transportation and road safety to encourage citizens not to opt for private automobiles. This will dampen the effect of the increase in electric vehicles in base load power generation, in addition to mass transportation means like trains.
I will not consider the politics involved as I am only concerned on the engineering aspect. If you still got more ideas on how we can address energy poverty, please comment below.

So You Want a New Car?
Honestly, I still don't have the desire to buy my own car. I don't know why.
Perhaps it's because of my being single. I will be the only passenger, so driving will definitely be not worth it. Also, my workplace is not so far from home. I don't travel that much as of now, and public transportation is still not expensive, as I see. Heavy traffic is also discouraging. Practicality remains to be my primary consideration.
Electric cars are available nowadays, but this may not be worth the buck due to high electricity prices in my country. Biofuels are also not cheap. So I guess it's best to look on efficiency instead, for me.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
I found this list of fuel-efficient cars available, which might change my mind. Suzuki Celerio tops the list with 34.34 km/L, but not so different with Suzuki Alto with 34 km/L, considering also the latter being cheaper in price.
With these models, you can just put accessories later on, in case you find their design boring. So you can have a pimped ride that is not fuel hungry. But of course, it depends on individual preferences, so this idea might not interest you.
Is fuel economy also a primary consideration for you? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

What's Happening???
Have you ever been in this situation?
Vision darkened. It's a blackout.
Can't even move a finger.
I can feel the water running down my throat, making it's path towards my belly...
I was playing ball with my barkada in an open court near our university. After 2 or 3 sets, I suddenly found myself fighting for my consciousness. Can't really figure out what was happening to me at that time.
Good thing, one of my friends assisted me to the bench. The one of them bought me ice tubig (cold water in a plastic) and gave me a drink. As I sip, it's like tracing my entire digestive system, as water makes its way towards my inner being.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
I realized afterwards that I was in a "Hello dehydration" moment, first time in my life. At that time, I didn't had enough fluids and rest during the game. I was enjoying so much, I didn't care for replenishments. Truly, it's a wrong move.
One of the book summaries I have read and listened to is "How To Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnegie. One of the big ideas there is "Rest BEFORE you get tired". I should have read it before my dehydration experience.
Taking breaks or pauses in our busy day-to-day activities can definitely reduce our fatigue, worries and even increase our productivity whether in work or in social life. We should never wait for exhaustion to take place, as it might be our last breath to take.
Rest as often as you can. Even machines need it. Just don't abuse, okay? ^_^
What events in your life unexpectedly brought you to your limit? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

Post It - Urgent & Important
When your to-do list gets very, very long, how do you prioritize?
I have experienced so much difficulty in choosing which of my job assignments to do first. My productivity also gets lower and lower as my to-do list gets longer and longer. Confusion is killing me as work is piling up.
But I have discovered a much modern way of doing it, digital version.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
As Brian Tracy has suggested, it's best to classify your tasks into 4 quadrants, and focus on the important tasks first. He has popularized the concept of Eat That Frog which tells us to do the most difficult important tasks as we start our day.

If you are using Windows 7 for your PC, perhaps you have tried those Sticky Notes, which are like Post-It notes in your desktop. Below is a screenshot of my office desktop PC screen.
A more productive way of utilizing that feature is to label them as to which is URGENT & IMPORTANT and NOT URGENT BUT IMPORTANT. Remember to DO THOSE THINGS FIRST. Then you can add other notes as you wish. Better to include also target dates.
It is optional to include the NOT IMPORTANT stuffs. For me, it will just crowd my desktop and become eye sores. I rather schedule them using Reminders feature of MS Outlook or my mobile phone, so they just appear as I wanted them to and not disturb my rhythm.
In this way, you will always be reminded of things you need to accomplish in the soonest possible time.
What about you? How do you organize your everyday tasks or goals? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

So How Much Salary Do You Expect???
Are you a fresh grad looking for the most profitable venture out there? Or an employee wanting to benchmark your income?
I graduated college with good standing, so I expected to earn around PhP30,000 a month on my first job. That wish didn't came true.
Then I ended up accepting the offer of the company where I went for OJT. Honestly, I didn't want to work there, at first. But the starting salary is not bad at all, so having no other choice, I accepted the offer rather than waiting months for luck to come my way. Thank goodness, things are going quite well, as I can still keep up with my priority: my faith.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Check out the 2013 salary trends in the Philippines as posted here by Jobstreet.com. You can find the updates on how much our highest-earning Filipino local employees put on their pockets on a regular basis.
Nevertheless, business venture, still, has a higher potential than being an employee. But the risks are higher, as a drawback. Working for another person is a more secured bread and butter.
How about you? What is your DREAM job? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

Networking Craze
Have been a victim of networking scams?
They are becoming more prevalent these days. Many network marketing groups are legitimate but frauds are also appearing in various settings. The potential returns is said to be almost limitless.
I've been to more than 5 networking companies, and 1 is a big scam. I also only earned good income from 1 of them, and that income came from sales only. Recruitment is definitely not part of my talent. Right now, I'm still active on 3 genuine companies.
The hype got me into curiosity because I'm definitely a risk taker. I realized that what I did was pure gambling. The potential returns attracted me to bet.
Now, let's try to make things simple...

Now, let's try to make things simple...
This video shows a funny exaggeration but a good "re-enactment" of what actually happens when someone blindly joins a networking group.
For us to not be a victim of these "registered syndicates" and become gamblers unknowingly, always keep these things in mind:
1. Always do your assignment first: research the company and gather all the details like years in operation and profile of the owners. New companies with very few members and inexperienced managers are most likely to go vanishing in the next few weeks.
2. If the products are something not of your interest, don't even make the first step in joining. You might won't be able to handle the negativities along the way.
3. If the presentations and members you are talking with are only using pure hype, go out of Business Opportunity Meeting (BOM) immediately. They are trained hypnotizers, I'm telling you.
4. Compare one company's product with another of the same core business, especially with health and wellness groups which are becoming popular these days. Most of them have same scripts, so beware.
5. If the company promises returns of more than 40% in a month's time, you should be more cautious! Stock market can't even provide such amount in such a short time. That's the reason why High Yield Instant Pay (HYIP) schemes are classified as high risk. 60% monthly returns are just a normal profit for them.
Don't waste your hard-earned money just like that. And don't forget to use your head in any venture you want to take.

Chapter 1, Verse 1
Do you allot time reading the Bible?
Most of us do not.
You know, that thick book with lots of words and difficult-to-understand passages. The format is not attractive to the eyes.
Well obviously, it's not meant to attract our eyes.
Some versions put some pictures or sketches, but still, pocketbooks, comics and mangas get more of our attention.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
In the TV channel UNTV 37, you can watch the program "Mapalad ang Bumabasa" (Blessed is He Who Reads) every 8pm on weekdays. Kuya Daniel is reading the passages, so you get both visual and audio formats at the same time.
You can also see the youtube, facebook, blogger and google+ channels.
In this way, it will make your life easier making Bible reading a daily habit, and you don't miss those spiritual moments.
Which of the books in both Old and New Testament have you read to date? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

Workout in 4 Minutes??? As in?!!!
How much time do you dedicate for fitness?
Definitely, time is a very valuable resource. Sometimes, the 24 hours a day we're given does not suffice for the line up of our activities. So any time-saving option really counts to make the most out of our busy schedule.
Unfortunately, jogging for just 2 minutes won't even make you catch your breath. You really need to traverse long distances and allot more time until you feel sweat running down your forehead.
When you hit the gym, you don't just workout only your biceps (which will make you look like Popeye). Also you don't use any equipment with just one repetition. And all those consumes your valuable TIME.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
I limit my exercise time to 30 - 40 minutes. Experts say it's the minimum you need to stay fit. I set another schedule for sports.
So I choose routines that will affect various muscle groups, can be incorporated in your daily routines and cover all aspects of human performance: cardio, flexibility, strength, agility and eventually, power. Core exercises are always on my list.
Do you know that brisk walking burns more calories than jogging? Good thing, you can always do it in between your daily tasks.
It was found that fast-paced movements with changing directions make you more fit than constant motions and monotonous exercises. So when you do jump rope, try do it as fast as lightning, and make explosive movements! When you use a stationary bicycle, don't make it like you're just strolling in a park; do it with a sprint!
Perhaps you can try the routine which is called finisher. Here are the features:
Aside from this, you can also use light weights like dumbbell; easy and convenient, you can use anytime, on your free time. I use them when I get sleepy in what I'm doing; it awakens my stagnant blood.
So what workout routines are you engaged currently? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

The Secret of Dieting & Food Fasting
Do you recognize this feeling?
Hands are shaking.
Always staring on the clock.
Vision starts to become cloudy.
Hearing fades.
Chills like fever.
The surroundings is starting to consume your being. And it's your tummy crying for help.
I have experienced it so many times.
Dieting, skipping meals, working lunch, getting caught in heavy traffic during dinner time, fasting: anyone who doesn't dread it?
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Sleepiness passes by. So is hunger. This I first learned also from Bro. Eli. Even the lust of the flesh can come to pass. Just try to ignore it (easy to say, though ^_^ ). Think of it as hunger. Both are urges that are part of human nature, which is definitely NOT beyond our control.
Pain of that urge to eat is just temporary and lasts short. The next few days, you won't feel it much. That's the secret of dieting and fasting.
Although it may be a daunting task to do a 40-day fast (like what they do in Biblical times) in our times, it's still possible. The reason for that difficulty is the pollution and stress surrounding us, unlike doing it high up in the mountains.
It is not true that stomach ulcers is an effect of frequently skipping meals. Rather, it is caused by an acidic digestive system. The cure for this is by eating cabbage or drinking cabbage juice. Prevention is by consuming alkaline foods, especially raw fruits and veggies, and avoiding much cooked food. Cooking makes your food acidic.
You'll reap the benefits after that fasting. Your digestive tract muscles get rest, and your body will have more energy to cleanse itself and do maintenance. The energy you use for digestion is used by your body for other functions. So fasting is also a form of cleansing, especially, water fasting, wherein you only take water for some time, no food at all, not even candies or gums.
The main reason your belly bulges or sags out is because of overwork. Give it time to relax, and you'll see your abs coming out the closet, a smaller waistline and your navel hiding in. Doing core exercises ALONE won't really do the trick, even how hard you do crunches and sit ups. Even your tummy wants to rest.
So the next time you try to fast, don't be terrified as you start to feel getting sick. Just keep yourself busy so you won't mind it. And if you see that you really cannot take the pain, take some water; that is, do water fasting.
The health effects are priceless. Cleaner system, and a sexier you.
Are you willing to start fasting or dieting from now on? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

Love Your Toilet Bowl
Are you experiencing difficult bowel movements? I do, sometimes.
I made it a habit to do so before I take a bath, so I feel completely clean. The problem is that if I eat too much meat, I'm having a hard time pushing it off my system.
Insoluble fiber cleans our gut and soluble fiber scrubs our bloody veins. So fiber really is definitely an important part of our daily diet.
But if you take too much carbs (rice, corn, sweet potato, etc.), your stomach gets so full, you can't take more fruits and veggies in. Also, the correct timing for taking in fruits is either 30 minutes before meals or 2 hrs after, so as not to have "opposing" enzymes during digestion, or you'll end up bloated with unpleasant smelling fireworks show behind...
Now, let's try to make things simple...
It's quite difficult, or better say, unconventional, to have a daily diet of fruits and veggies to meet your fiber needs. Filipinos are raised in a diet of rice and viand. Even more, prices of those stuffs are always going up.
Include psyllium husk in your drinks, anytime you want! Of course, if you are new in this, start with small amounts then gradually increase intake.
The first time I tried this, I feel pounds being removed inside me. You will see the difference when your intestines get cleaned by those fiber scrubbers. Even your skin will glow and your face will get smooth! It is proven that if your middle section is clean, most diseases, including pimples and bad breath or halitosis, can be removed. It's a good detoxifier.
Take note that it's still best to get your daily dose of fiber from fruits and veggies, in order to get bonus nutrients. And the best way to have them regularly is to plant them in your available lot. See one of my backyard plants here.
Psyllium husk is available in raw or capsule forms. Choose whichever is convenient for you.
Do you think taking more fiber will improve your well-being? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

Pay Me Now!!! Or Else...
How do you feel when someone you lent doesn't pay you on due date? Or never ever pays every money he borrows?
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Lend what you can afford to lose.
Have you experienced lending someone PhP500.00 and then he or she didn't paid back? How did you feel? If you felt anger and even reprimanded the borrower, then it means you can't afford losing that much money.
But if you didn't felt bad, then most probably you can lend that amount again or perhaps, even more!
If you can't afford PhP100.00 to not come back to you, then do not lend PhP100.00 to anyone! Who cares if the other person felt bad! You can just say, "I'm sorry.. Got so many expenses this month that I can't escape."
If you lent PhP10.00 and the borrower did not pay you, then you didn't feel sorrow nor rage, it means it's fine for you to lend PhP10.00.
Again, always be prepared for the worst. And know the limits of your feelings.
So how much money have you given away to debtors? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

"And the culprit is..."
"We believe this product will work with your application."
It's been five years since I was introduced on the art of bidding for a purchase requisition. "Art" as I call it, because you need not only technical understanding of your application, but also "detective" skills.
Unfortunately, polygraph is not allowed on these kind of discussions, so research is very essential to arrive at the best offer in front of you.
Last year, I was tasked to order steam traps to replace the existing ones which were found inappropriate. I asked four suppliers to do survey of the system, then provide me their offer. It later came out there are some differences in the results of their study, and they quoted different types of traps, which put me in a "lost" situation.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
I decided to look for expert, NEUTRAL opinions, but it's quite difficult to look for such in our area. So I sought the help of Linkedin, a social networking site for professionals.
Being affiliated in so many groups, that made my search easy. After posting my problem in the page, steam experts who has worked in various companies such as the suppliers who came to me, responded to my call. Good thing, those suppliers are world famous corporations, so everyone in the group understands how to approach my problem.
I later found out from the consultation that the bidders quoted to me the steam trap product where they have the majority of world market share. I also found out through the said experts and from some online literature which type is the best for my need, so I was able to make the best choice.
I was also able to pinpoint the salespersons who are eager to make a sale and recklessly offering unsuitable products which can mean great loss in our operations, which they care less about.
Social media is not only there for us to connect with friends and get gossips, but will also assist us in our chosen career. So we must make a wise use of them, and not confine our thinking with the common.
How do you evaluate options put in your table? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

We All Love This Game
Love basketball? Well, most Filipinos do (including yours truly), and the Filipinas as well.
Some players are good in the game because of regular practice, while others enroll in summer basketball clinics. The latter is definitely better if you got the time and cash, of course, at hand.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Here we go again, YouTube University! Good thing the basketball curriculum is available, even for those who cannot afford the paid programs in the neighborhood. Videos can be a great way to learn the game, just by imitating the acting.
I found this Shot Science Basketball channel and they have a great series where you will easily understand the basics. Check out the vids here.

Your Personal "Mobile" Loading Station
So who's not texting here?
It is sometimes quite troublesome to look for a loading station when you are busy working on something or the nearest store is kilometers from your location.
I also experienced spending more than PhP400 worth of cellphone load because of my job, and yet my company won't provide that for me free.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Why not consider having a "personal loading station"? What I mean is, have your own load wallet, so you can load yourself anytime, anywhere with signal. And as a bonus, you get 10% discount everytime.
Better try VMobile Technouser card. For PhP250, you can become a "walking loading station". You can even sell load wallet to anyone ,if you want.
Another good thing is, you can sell 300+ load products, whether it be cellphone, internet, cable, online games, etc., with just 1 mobile phone and 1 sim card! Isn't that incredible?! No need for rental fees, carrying bulky prepaid cards and buying three (3) cellphone units to start an eloading biz.
For more info, check out the product list here.
Thinking of putting up an e-loading business? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

No Fear, No Stage Fright
Have you experienced reporting, whether spoken or in writing?
I had so much of that when I was in high school. And I really hate it at that time. Now, my work requires me making various presentations for my projects and submitting documents as required by the government.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Almost all kinds of activities require that you report to somebody, in one way or the other, so it's part of our everyday life, I have learned some pointers which I got from work experience. Here's what I'm doing with my reports:
1. Always bear in mind that you need to make the report show what the recipient, or your boss perhaps, wants to see; don't show them what YOU want them to see.
2. Every item in the slides must have a logical flow. Give reason to everything that you will show in the report and make sure you are ready to be questioned for every item displayed in your presentation. It should look like an outline of the idea you want to emphasize
3. "Fifth graders" must get your point. Like what Einstein said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Accountants will not easily get the point being explained by an engineer (no offense ^_^).
4. Layout everything as short as possible. Show less, talk more.
5. Less words, more figures. Put colorful pictures, graphs, bullets, numbers, visuals, etc., and then modify them to look more eye-catching and interesting for everyone to see. Most people are bored with reading, as I do.
6. Be creative. Devise ways on making your slides unique and stylish, but not messed up. Proofreading is the key. Think out-of-the-box, as they say.
7. Try to be calm or better cheer yourself up before your turn. It's best to practice on a script and ask a kid to listen. If he says "Cool!", you're on! (Haven't tried this, though...).
It's probable that you won't get it right the first time. You'll gain confidence along the way.
What reporting style have you proven effective as of this moment? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

Dictionary In a Click
Do you always encounter peculiar or unknown words while surfing the internet?
If you're like me, I'm not so fluent with the English language. So I always need to have a dictionary, either the usual thick book by Mr. Webster or through my mobile phone, beside me every time I'm searching for various things online.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Why not try using Google Dictionary? Just a double-click is enough to give you the definitions of the word you want to understand. So easy! Your reference is right before your eyes, in your desktop!
This can also be a replacement for your heavy hardbound, and an online translator, too. You can download the app here.
How do you increase your vocabulary? Do you think this app will be of great help? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

Blogging Can Be Easy
You find it complicated, difficult and tedious to blog, is that right?
That's what I thought also, until I got the courage to start. The beginning is always the hardest part.
Here's my very first blogsite. This was intended for my online business and I got help from my upline.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
I recommend that you do the following, which I learned from professional bloggers and from my personal experience:
1. Jot down to your mobile phone or pocket notebook, every time an idea pops up.
2. Write down ANYTHING then save in Drafts folder, for later editing and posting.
3. Write about ANYTHING. Everyone experienced failures, so write them all down, and give your readers SOLUTIONS. Blog about things you found while window-shopping. Tell your stories going to new places like tourist spots and hotels.
4. Read articles of interest to you, then write a review.
5. Comment on videos, audios and pictures you come across the world wide web.
You can add more to these tips as you go on your blogging career. The key is to start NOW and break down the ice of negativity freezing you.
What particular niche can you blog about? Please share your experiences and insights in the comments section below.

My First Time ABROAD
I had a chance to go to Thailand, but not for a tour, but for work -_-
The funny thing is, I was told in morning, that I'll be leaving the country tonight! It was such a hassle, but real exciting. Good thing, I have a passport prepared.
I dreamed of going to other countries. Well, almost everyone else does!
Even though we went there for work, I had the chance to visit various restaurants and eateries. The sidewalk Thai foods are the best!
Now the unlikely thing is, I was not able to prepare for communicating with my family, because of the rush. I was told that for Globe subscribers, I have to go to the nearest outlet in order to activate roaming service (please correct me if this is wrong).
Now, let's try to make things simple...
Try using SUN Cellular! Roaming can be done instantly, without going to shops!

Board Exam Tips
Is your heart throbbing fast for an upcoming board exam?
Here in the Philippines, many college graduates undergo the professional licensure examinations, or commonly Board Exam, in various fields of study, such as civil engineering, education and nursing. It is unavoidable that passing the board has a factor of luck, considering the the vast scope of what we have to review, and the possibility that wrong answers might be mistaken to be correct.
The best advice is, to really FOCUS during review period, as this is a crucial stage in our professional lives. But of course, you need to have short periods of relaxation so as not to spoil yourself.
Now, let's try to make things simple...
It is unavoidable that we encounter questions never heard before and sometimes, we're just not sure if we remember the answer right due to the tension from the crucial moment. Let me share to you the following tips I learned from personal experience.
1. Skip it first. After answering all items that you are sure you know very well, go back to the ones you skipped. Take extra care in shading if this is to be done.
2. Look for patterns in your answer sheet. Take a look at the figure below.
The answer in item number 40 is the option that will not break the continuity of the pattern, that is, letter C.
3. If two among the four choices display same answers, the first of the two is the correct one.
In this case, the answer will be letter A.
4. If one of the choices look different or has a different format as the other three, usually that's the correct answer. Always be keen with these obvious giveaways.
The choice in letter C will the right one.
Take note that these tips were applicable with high probability during my time, so I cannot guarantee that it will still be effective nowadays, but they are worth noting. Try to figure out those patterns for yourself as you go along those past board materials you have at hand.
Hope this will help even a bit. Never EVER lose confidence that you can pass.
